America-Provence: A History of French Architecture
So what really caused the timeless trend called European-style architectural design? The story goes something like this. During World War I, American soldiers found themselves taking inspiration from the design of French houses in the suburbs and villages. After the war, many of these soldiers brought this style with them in their suitcases and transformed their homes into ones that would remind them of the scents of provincial lavender fields. The popularity of this trend has come and gone, but it has continued to be a central feature in the portfolio of almost every interior designer or architectural planner you will meet. There are a number of elements that are considered essential and they include:
Natural stones. Typical French homes are usually based on symmetry, so they make extensive use of stones to pave the facade of the house.
High tiled roofs. When talking about country-style architecture combined with luxury home design, tiled roofs in different colors immediately come to mind.
Tall, rectangular windows. These windows not only add to the design of luxury homes, but are also an important element of French design because they contribute to the symmetry of the building and help it appear taller.
Double chimneys. In addition to all of these, the French style uses two chimneys instead of one, located on both sides of the house.
Wooden ceilings and plastered walls. As if you didn't try hard, we said, so when it comes to the French, you have no idea how hard we didn't try, that one of the biggest characteristics of European architectural design, are plaster marks on the wall. If you're not into that, stick with the wooden roofs.
Subtle colors. There are many design styles when it comes to designing luxury homes, but in the French style, the line that connects all the elements is the color palette and the use of yellow, cream, pale blue, or gray finishes.
Do it yourself, or let us do it for you
Starting with the roofs, the texture of your wall and a wealth of options in terms of furniture, this is all that is needed to produce the scents of lavender, out of nowhere, in our Land of Israel. Our goal in the European-style architectural design process is to create a feeling of lightness, village and when talking about the French people – also of luxury.
