Ornate Arches: All About Mediterranean Architecture for Beginners

Known for its red tile roofs, stucco facades, and arched and vaulted corners, the Mediterranean style is one of the most popular architectural design styles in the United States. Although architectural design often draws its inspiration from Italy, Portugal, Spain, and other countries around the Mediterranean, over time, influences from France, Greece, and Morocco have also begun to arrive. We don’t know about you, but aside from the fact that it makes it difficult for us to understand what the client wants, combining all the cultures together is our favorite option. To give you a little bit of order – we’ve put together three easier ways to understand exactly what this Mediterranean style everyone is talking about.

Mediterranean What: All the styles and sub-styles of Mediterranean grandeur
In the 1920s, the revival of the Mediterranean architectural style experienced an explosion in demand because the American people prioritized everything related to the holy trinity of wealth-luxury-style and it was an excellent ground on which the style of planning and interior design could flourish. As we argued in previous articles, which dealt with colonial interior design and design or other classic styles, the Mediterranean style also drew its inspiration from many other styles and cultures, but there are three specific styles when it comes to Mediterranean architecture.

1. Italian Renaissance.

Characterized by arches and pipes, this type of Mediterranean house draws most of its inspiration from the Italian Renaissance that accompanied the 16th century. Typically, a Mediterranean home with an Italian Renaissance accent is the most grandiose.

2. Spanish Revival.

Borrowing from many architectural ideas developed by Spanish settlers in America, the Colonial style of planning and interior design is all Spanish, but more subdued and rugged than the Middle Eastern style. Spanish Colonial homes are often single-story, with clean lines and a clay roof.

3. Mediterranean Modern.

Focused on vacation homes, a modern home can blend with a wide range of styles and cultures. Open floor plans, large kitchens, and living styles with a focus on connecting the indoors with the outdoors are all found in Mediterranean homes.

The Mediterranean buildings we know today are known to you as Mediterranean Revival, and were built to maximize the warmth, richness, and tranquility of the Mediterranean villa. Although the style was recreated for all sorts of public buildings such as hotels and vacation rooms with a view of the hotel, it became popular among the American people, in Florida and California. They believed that the rich and extravagant style fit in well with the area in terms of the gods and the lifestyle of the place.
